MARTY HAILEY

Marty Hailey is a composer, music producer and studio owner based in Edinburgh, Scotland. Born in Liverpool to British and American parents, Marty grew up and studied in Australia which is also where his professional career began. Initially an in demand guitarist on the scene in Sydney, Marty became a popular session player for bands in the studio and major label touring acts. During his time in studios he further developed his knowledge and honed his skills in recording and production, working on countless sessions at Sony Studios Sydney and producing at a host of other premises including 301, Paradise, BJB, Rhino and Damien Gerard’s. In 2003 Marty acquired his own room at Audioscapes and then later on went on to Blackfoot Sound where he worked until moving back to the UK. A dedicated professional session musician who plays electric and acoustic guitars, lapsteel, banjo, mandolin and drums, Marty is also a talented arranger and producer for small and large ensembles and recording projects; regularly scoring for brass, string quartets and small chamber groups. He also has an obsession with (and sizeable collection of!) synthesisers from the 70s and 80s. His broad experience as a performer, composer and musical director gives him a vast palette to draw from and he enjoys exploring the melding of sonic worlds. As a performer and musical director he has worked on The West End, on Broadway, in Las Vegas, across the UK, Europe, Australia and the South Pacific. He has over 25 years experience in the music industry, has made over 70 records and produced and engineered countless single sessions. His credits in theatre include composing the music and sound design for the critically acclaimed Workhorse Theatre production of Stephen Aly Gurgis’ ‘The Motherf**ker With The Hat’ and as musical director for international cabaret sensation Le Gateau Chocolat. The winning of a Helpmann Award for the ‘Smoke & Mirrors’ score in 2010 (a sell out show that toured Sydney, Melbourne, Adelaide Cabaret, Edinburgh Fringe and Auckland International Festivals) led Marty to become composer and MD for the circus/cabaret show ‘Empire’ (in which he performed on Broadway in 2012). His work as musical director/composer for the ‘I Hate Children Children’s Show’ from San Francisco took this show to Adelaide Fringe, Glastonbury and Edinburgh Fringe festivals. In 2013 he received an invitation from the Edinburgh International Fashion Festival to compose bespoke music and sound design for their program and worked closely with designers Clements Ribeiro in tailoring a score to their runway show. Recently he has worked closely as MD and composer with punk cabaret outfits The Little Death Club and Club Kabarett. Marty was musical director for La Clique’s triumphant return to London's West End in 2019. In 2008 he contributed to the score of the award winning documentary, 'The Burning Season.
